London, St. James's, February 8 1772. This morning between
the hours of 6 and 7, her Royal Highness the Princess
Dowager of Wales departed this life, to the great grief of
their Majesties and all the Royal Family, after a very long
and painfull illness, which she bore with great fortitude
and resignation.
. . . [31 lines on her life and children]
Upon the above melancholy occasion, St. Paul's great bell,
on which the clock strikes was tolled from 11 to past 12
o'clock, when the clapper, which weighed upwards of an
100lb. weight, broke into two pieces, and of course the
tolling ceased, which was to have continued until one
o'clock. The Play-Houses, the Opera-Houses, and places of
public diversions will be shut up for some time.
