New York, January 16. About eleven o'clock last night the
inhabitants of this city were suddenly and greatly alarmed
by the cry of fire, the striking out of the Fire Bell, and
all of the other bells in the city; but it was soon after
found that a body of men (as it is said Royal Americans) had
entered the New Goal, and demanded the keys of Mr. Mills,
the Keeper, who refusing to deliver them, received several
wounds with a bayonet.
. . . Part of our Militia were collected together as soon as
possible by beat of drum; remained under arms all night, and
have taken six of the persons.
