Location Tolland
Citation
CG-NH.762.017
11 Sep 1762:41 (388)
Run away from his master Samuel Chapman of Tolland, on
Friday night last, a Negro man servant, named Newport. . .
[9 lines describing appearance of servant]. . . speaks good
English, and can play well on a violin. . . [4 lines
describing terms of return] Sept. 6, 1762. [signed] Samuel
Chapman. . . [2 lines forbidding ship masters from "carrying
off said Negro."]
[N.B. Interesting thing here is that poor Newport has "the
end of one of his fingers shot to pieces, has a large cut on
the little finger of his left hand, which is somewhat stiff
and crooked," yet he "can play well on the violin."]
