Richmond, February 15.
Tuesday last being the birth day of his Excellency General
Washington, was observed in this city, with every public and
private demonstration of joy. At noon minute discharges of
thirteen pieces of cannon were fired at the state-house, and
at four o'clock in the afternoon, the same number from the
shipping at Rocket's. In the evening there was a numerous
and brilliant assembly of ladies and gentlemen from this
city, and the neighboring country; upwards of one hundred
ladies, and an equal number of gentlemen being present; the
oeconomy, decorum, and propriety of which could only be
exceeded but by the festive mirth and social happiness,
which appeared in every countenance, affording the surest
testimony of unaffected regard to the character of the
illustrious Washington, whose years may heaven multiply with
encreasing honors, until it shall please the Great Rewarder
of virtue to translate him into happier scenes of endless
glory.
