Extract of a letter from Rome, Sept. 3.
Since the late affair happened in the church of St Peter's,
the Pope as well as many of the cardinals, are convinced of
their errors in regard of Catholicity intend therefore an
intire reformation in religion, yet have not settled nor
fixed on any new form on account of the many divisions in
the sacred college. . . [28 lines] I had like to have forgot
acquainting you that the Pope appears in a lay dress with
bag and sword. He danced the 29th ult. at a splendid ball
given at the Vatican with the Princess of Monaco, and has
thrown off all that austerity which was usual to the Popes.
