Portsmouth, January 24, 1772. Saturday last, being the
birth day of our most gracious Queen Charlotte, was observed
here in a manner suitable to the occasion. . . On Monday
evening, his excellency Governor Wentworth and lady, gave a
grand and elegant ball at the new assembly room, to the
ladies and gentlemen of the town; at which were present
also, the officers of his majesty's ships the Swan and
Canceaux, and a number of strangers then in town.---The
splendor and brilliancy of the ladies, the grandeur and
elegance of the room, and the harmony and festivity which
reign'd among the numerous joyful guests, all conspirated to
give this entertainment the preference to any of the kind,
ever before given in this province.
