New York, January 16.  About eleven o'clock last night the
inhabitants of this city were suddenly and greatly alarmed
by the cry of fire, the striking out of the fire-bell, and
all the other bells in the city; but it was soon found that
a body of men (as it is said royal Americans) had entered
the new goal, and demanded the keys of Mr. Mills, the
keeper, who refusing to deliver them, received several
wounds with a bayonet.  They afterwards, forced the doors,
and let loose all or most of the prisoners.--It seems their
principal interest was to release Major Rogers, who a few
days ago came to town, was arrested, and confined in that
place, which they effected. . .
