They write from Paris, that the ball, which that city gave
the 30th of last month, N.S. was one of the most brilliant
that ever they saw. A great hall was built for that purpose
in the court of the town house, which, by the magnificent
taste of the decorations, and the art with which it was
illuminated, afforded a very fine prospect. Besides this,
three large rooms were built close to the hall, with side
boards in them, covered with all sorts of refreshments. It
is computed, that in this ball were consumed 1800 bottles of
champaign, 4000 bottles of burgundy, upward of 30 hogsheads
of liquors, called by the French, limonade and [org], 15000
peaches, and a vast quantity of Westphalia hams, partridges,
and dry sweet meats, &c.
