During the rehearsal of a new tragedy, written by Mr.
Thomson, call'd Edward and Eleanora, (which was to have been
acted - this [day], he receiv'd, to his great surprize, a
message from the Lord Chamberlain, absolutely forbidding the
acting of said play. No objective having been made to the
whole or any part of it, we must conclude it was consider'd
as immoral or seditious. If the author is conscious of not
having [met] with any such intention, it is hoped that for
his own justification, he will print this play, and so
submit it to the judgment of his country.
