This day published, and sold by the printer hereof
Tamerlaine, a Tragedy:
As it is shortly to be acted at the theatre in this town.
[rule] A gentleman has sent us the following remarks on
some of the performers in The Tragedy of Tamerlane on Monday
last.
The gentleman that play'd Tamerlane, was extreme just in
his action, we think in a few instances he did not exert his
voice sufficiently: That he has much judgment in playing
must have convinced those that had the pleasure of seeing
him in Chatillon.
Perhaps of the profession there are few could play Monesis
with greater propriety: We much approve the alt'ring his
complexion in the Vth act as suitable to his mournful
condition; and should be an example to the theatres of
Drury-Lane and Covent Garden.
Omar, very justly sustain'd that fierceness of behaviour
proper to the character finely executed.
The Prince of Tanais, in the first scene attentive to his
part and graceful in his deportment, but in the succeeding
ones (except when it was his cue to speak) wholly engross'd
in admiring the dear creatures his fair auditors: We cannot
dismiss this character without observing the dress was
elegant.
Axalla was perform'd with great ease and judgment: We
must remark in every character this gentleman has oblig'd
the audience in, he is exceedingly correct.
Whoever has seen the much admired Barry in Bajazet, must
observe a strong semblance to the gentleman's method of
playing it the other night; his indignant manner in throwing
away his chains, his exultation in provoking the moderation
of Tamerlane's temper in "ha[ ] does it gall thee Tartar"
&c. and his demanding the head of Tamerlane is Barry
exactly.
We have referr'd our choicest subject for the last.
Arpasia and Selima most agreeably perform'd--A sweet
timidity prevent the full exertion of their powers, but that
they feel the beauties of the poet, their expressive
features sufficiently inform us. S.B.
