Portsmouth, New-Hampshire, Jan. 24. Saturday last being the
birth day of our most gracious Queen Charlotte, was observed
here in a manner suitable to the occasion. At twelve
o'clock his Majesty's Castle William & Mary, and the ships
of war in the harbour fired royal salutes, and a number of
loyal healths as usual on these joyful occasions, were drank
by the gentlemen at the castle and on board the said
ships.--On Monday his Excellency Governor Wentworth and
lady, gave a grand and elegant ball at the new Assembly
Room, to the ladies and gentlemen of the town; at which were
present also, the officers of his Majesty's ships Swan &
Canceaux, and a number of strangers then in town.--The
splendor and brilliancy of the ladies, the grandeur &
elegance of the room, and the harmony & festivity which
reigned among the numerous joyful guests, all conspired to
give this entertainment the preference to any of the kind
ever before given in this province.
