From the London Magazine, for June, 1768. A gentleman at
Black Barnsley in Yorkshire, writes to his friend in London
the following account, viz.
That on the 15th ult. was married at that place, one Thomas
Gregory, a rich farmer in that neighbourhood, aged about
eighty, to one Mrs. Lydia Turnbal a widow lady near the same
age: they had lived together as neighbours for upwards of
fifty years and been each three times married. All the
relations and friends on both sides were invited to the
ceremony; and, after that, to dinner: they amounted to
upwards of 120: the men had each a white favour in their
hats, and the women one at their bosoms, As it was
publickly known some days before hand, the the church, which
is but small, was quite thronged: the old couple seemed all
spirits, and as gay as the youngest there. Every room in
the farmer's house was full at dinner, which consisted on
nothing but beans and bacon. Eighty loaves the number of
years the bridegroom was old, were given to the poor, with
as much beer as they would drink; so that most of the were
so intoxicated, that the farmer's barns and outhouses were
filled with lodgers: those within doors, after they had
danced and carouzed till sun rising, went reeling home.
Such a wedding has not been seen in Yorkshire for many years
past, and may be talked of for many years to come.
