Paris, Jan. 17. N.S. Yesterday morning we were saluted
with a discharge of the cannon of the Bastile and the Hotel
de Ville; in the afternoon, the Te Deum was sung in our
Cathedral; and at night we had bonfires & illuminations, for
the taking of the castle of Milan by the King's troops. His
Majesty's letter to the archbishop of Paris on that
occasion, was as follows:
. . . [23 lines] So many Favours oblige me to go on to
return him thanks for the marks of his protection, which he
does not cease to give men: I therefore write you this
letter, to tell you that my intention is, that you cause the
Te Deum to be sung in your metropolitan church, and other of
your archbishoprick, with the usual solemnities. . .
Signed, Louis, and underneath Phelypeaux.
