[London] Yesterday morning the death of our late most
gracious sovereign Lord King George, of blessed memory, was
solemnized here, by the discharge of guns of Castle William
at the distance of half a minute, &c. And about two a
clock, P.M. His present Majesty George the Second, was
joyfully proclaimed King of Great Britain, France and
Ireland, &c. by proclamation of His honour our Lieut.
Governour and Commander in Chief, with advice of His
Majesty's Council; the Hon. House of Representatives, his
Majesty's justices of the peace, abundance of gentry of both
sexes, three regiments of foot, five troops of horse,
consisting of near 2000 men in arms, and a vast concourse of
people, attending on so great an occasion. After which
three loud huzzas were given, and three volleys from each
regiment and troop; and upon a signal given, the artillery
of his Majesty's Castle were discharged, as were the guns on
several wharffs and on board the ships: The bells on the
churches in this town continuing ringing from twelve a
clock, till near night; when the town was finely
illuminated, a great bon-fire made, and abundance of curious
fire-works, with other demonstrations of joy.
