Paris, Sept. 12. Among other particulars of the [soon-to-
be] Queen's magnificent reception at Metz in Lorrain, the
Jews who have a synagogue and a great trade in that city,
having obtained leave to pay their respects to her Majesty,
one of their Syndies, who was appointed their spokesman,
went to compliment her; but at the sight of the Princess he
was so dashed that he had not one word to say: Upon which
another of the Syndies who had the complement at his
tongue's end, advanced to relieve his comrade; but he too
was so confounded that he could not bring it out; so that
the two orators without any more ceremony, presented her
Majesty with what was thought more valuable than the flowers
of rhetorick, viz. 3 gold cups engrav'd, one of them having
an antique representation of the Q. of Sheba, and some other
Old Testament Figures; which present her Majesty gave to the
Bishop. And at night the Jews, to the number of 160, made a
very fine cavalcade, and caused their chanters to sing an
epithalamium upon her marriage, which was writ in gold
letters upon a banner, and accompani'd with a fine consort
of German musick.
