Paris, May 20. On the 22d in the evening the Marshal de
Villars made a splendid ball at Strasbourg, the better to
conceal the execution of his intended enterprize, and escape
the observation of any that might give intelligence to the
enemy. At 11 at night he had directed a courtier to come to
him, under pretence of bringing orders from the King; and
taking leave of the company, as if he went to read his
letters, desir'd them to continue their diversion. He left
the town, privately at midnight, and at one in the morning
