Messieurs Edes & Gill, 'Tis strange to think how great
offence hath been taken, by one's calling "the merry
feasting, frolicking and dancing of men and women together,"
which usually take up the whole night and part of the next
day, by the name of revelling.
It has been construed into a scandalum magnatum, as it
were virtually saying, the men of rank concerned in the
entertainment, or ball on June 4, 5, were actually guilty of
drunkenness, and lasciviousness: The author might have
added idolatry too, because that is mentioned in the same
verse with revelling, 1 P. iv. V. 3 Expositors explain
every article in the verse separately; and don't make
revelling, a general word to stand for all. However, the
most serious Christians, ministers and others, have all long
looked on these high frolicks to be condemned by Peter,
under the word revelling: Nay some churches excommunicate
those who pass their nights in such merry meetings. No man
can force himself to think that Peter and Paul would have
approved of them. And I charitably believe, the bulk of
ministers, even of those who are byassed to think as
favourably as they can, condemn them in their hearts, fi
decere mussant.
N.B. If any one writes scurrilously, he will be
neglected.
