Extract of a letter. New Port, Sept. 10, 1761. As to the
opposition and clamour against the Play-House erected here,
it was much too vehement to continue, and, like the snow or
hail of midsummer, melted gradually away. The house was
open'd on the second of the month with the Fair Penitent,
and Esor in the Shades: and I cannot think you ever saw the
Royal houses of Drury and Covent Garden fuller (without
being crowded) or any audience there more deeply attentive
or better pleased. On the evening of the fourth Jane Shore
with the Toy-Shop were perform'd to the highest satisfaction
of a very full house. On Monday and Tuesday last the
Provok'd Husband with the Miller of Mansfield were perform'd
with the greatest applause. Last evening George Barnwell
with the Mock Doctor were exhibited before a great many of
our General Assembly, and as many others as then could be
admitted, and I can assure you that the audience were
greatly mov'd and affected with the distress and fate of the
unhappy hero of that very moral and virtuous entertainment.
Upon the whole I not only invite you here on this
occasion, but encourage you to give all your friends ample
assurances that the Company of Comedians here, more than
verify their just letters of credence from Virginia, and are
indeed ' capable of entertaining a very polite and sensible
audience.
  I am yours, &c.
