London. Extract of a letter from Paramaribo, in Surranam,
dated Nov. 12th 1753.
-----"Saturday last being the birth-day of his Majesty King
George, his British subjects present at Surrinam, solemnized
the day in the following manner: . . . [21 lines] After
which, the English assembled at the tavern, where was
prepared some hams, tongues &c. and a general invitation
given to the Dutch gentlemen of the place.---For the ladies
there was a ball given by an English merchant; before whose
house the works were erected. There was a very brilant
appearance of the fair sex of the first rank of the place;
from one of whose hands the whole of the machine was set in
illumination, by touching a postillion on a cord from the
house to the artifice.--The whole was conducted in the
greatest good order and regularity.
