From the St. James's Evening Post. An account of the
insurrection of the Chineze at Batavia in October 1740.
  I cannot but import to you the dismal misfortune we have
lately met with, viz a conspiracy among the Chineze dwelling
in and about this city (who were upwards of 90,000) to
massacre every one of us Europeans, and make themselves
masters of the island of Java. . . [12: 3d full para.:]
  At nine o'clock the Chineze, to the number of 40 or 50,000
advanced with a terrible noise of drums, trumpets, bason,
and heidous shouts, in order to give their comrades in the
city a signal for the attack;
but those within seeing our good regulation and order, and
that they were depriv'd of every opportunity to join their
brethren, kept themselves very quite, being a seiz'd with
fear; and indeed had they ventur'd upon the matter, in
combination with the rest, we had all been destroyed, being
little upwards of 3000 fighting men. . .  [1 para, + 1 1/3
