Newport, June 19. We have by Capt. Beare (who arrived here
on the 15th instant in 30 days from Jamaica) the
disagreeable news of our army's being defeated before
Carthagena, by a very desperate attempt. . . [14 lines] At
Jamaica they are much displeased with the conduct of some
officers, for when the general returned from waiting on his
Excellency a certain gentleman then ordered his Negro to
sound a retreat on his trumpet, perhaps thinking it to be
