[2 Latin lines; signed:] Eanius in Phaenice.
The following discourse was sent us from Dublin; we have no
authority to name the author, nor indeed can we do it any
otherwise than by guess, and that will be unnecessary; for
it is probably, the generality of our readers have as good a
knack as guessing as we.
Sir, . . . [one brother describes and complains about an
older and a younger brother, then asks the reader's advice]
First then to begin with my [older] brother George: he
was ever a great lover of his belly, and formerly used to
cram himself with [English and French food which adversely
effected his disposition]
. . . But of late he has fallen into strange and
unaccountable effeminacy, and seems to take delight in
nothing, but masquerades, plays and Italian operas.
He is very fond of Italian magnificent buildings, altho'
entirely inconsistent with our climate, extravagant in the
highest degree, in purchasing fine paintings and statures,
and no less expensive in vast extensive-parks and gardens,
by which means, and paying interest for great debts, he has
almost run out all his fortune.
. . . He openly professes himself a most rigid fanatick of
the kirk, yet he is shrewdly suspected to have a hankering
after popery. . .
