Rome, March 10. N.S. . . New oppositions are raised
against the building of the Cesarini Theatre: The priests
of the two churches of St. Julian of the Flemings, & that of
the Holy Handkerchief of the Savoyards withstand the
building of a theatre contiguous to them. Church and
theatre, like tap and tabernacle, will not agree; and yet
the Jesuites find means of reconciling these publick
entertainments to good ends, and make them, like the sisters
Mary and Martha, help one another. The opposition perhaps
is not so strong on the side of vice: The greatest
libertine in his own herd desires to be vertuous; but where
are the zealous for vertue? Who will lead the multitude to
applaud what strengthens vertue, and to hiss off the state
what ever may give fuel to vice.
