At the ball lately given by the gentlemen of Boston to his
Excellency the French Admiral and to the worthy officers of
his fleet, where 'Squire Mac Limpo the lawyer made his
grotesque appearance! a young lady of some humour asked,
"Why is O'Sullivan said to be like a cooper's adze?"
Because, replied a gentleman who stood near to her, the
sharpness of his malice (like Hogarth's line of beauty) is
in the curve: He has no edge that will cut streightforward:
He has therefore circuitously wounded the cooper himself,
who insidiously made use of him to "hurt and injure" an
innocent meritorious character.
