From the London Gazetteer, October 15, 1774. The bloody
news from America has turned out more a matter of laughter
than of real concern; and the extraordinary precautions
which, we have been told, government used to suppress the
intelligence from Boston by the Scarborough man of war,
appear only to be the pompous suggestions of designing men.
. . [3d para.:] Beside the above authentic information,
some gentlemen of veracity have condescended to assure the
public, that when Mr. Edson, one of the new Council, and a
deacon, attempted to sing at divine service, that all the
congregation sat down, and refused to join with him in
devotion.--This is such dreadful news, Mr. Printer, that the
Ministry were much in the right to suppress it.---Yet it may
be proper to observe to the public the strictness of worship
among the people of Massachusets: They deny praise and
adoration to the Supreme Being, because there is one
political sinner amongst them: no wonder then that they, on
the same account, refuse obedience to the laws of
Parliament. . . How many astonishing victories have the
rebels of Massachusets, gained over England, and an English
Parliament! . . . They refused to sing to the praise of the
Lord along with one of their own deacons:. . .
