Cambridge, July 18, 1771. Yesterday being the anniversary
commencement at Harvard College, his Excellency the
Governor--his Honor the Lieutenant-Governor--the Honorable
and Reverend Overseers and principal gentlemen of the
province; with a great number of ladies, and a vast
concourse of people of all ranks attended at the college.
The public exercises in the forenoon consisted of a
salutatory oration in Latin. . . [70 more lines giving
orations, names of degree-recipients] The solemnity was
concluded with a Latin valedictory oration and an anthem.
The whole was conducted with elegance and propriety much to
the credit of the college and the satisfaction of the
audience.
