To the associated Pastors of the churches in this town,
Gentlemen, [Part of a 2-column letter]. . . and let them be
ordained at large; but before they begin to preach let them
go to London, and after the example of Mr. W--d frequent the
play-house, and act as those that appear on the stage, that
they may learn those agreeable gestures, and that artful way
of speaking, which are so much admired in him, and you see
are so absolutely necessary, to give force to preaching:
Theatrical gestures, and a fine elocution, have a kind of
facinating influence; which gives life and energy to a
pulpit discourse, and by a sweet compulsion, charms the
listening audience, and captivates the attention of their
