Extract of a letter from Lisbon, Sept. 7.  When Gen.
Burgoyne surprized the Spanish frontier town of Valencia de
Alcantara, on the night of the 27th ult. he found therein
the whole Regiment of Valencia, and 7 companies of
grenadiers, who were all put to the sword because they got
into the houses, and fired after the surrender, except 63
soldiers, 14 officers, 30 peasants and the governor, who is
a major general.  The garrison with the peasants made up
about 2000 men.----
  There was taken in the city, as military store, 20
mortars, 37 pieces of cannon,. . . 1689 fardoes of clothing,
500 pair of boots, 10 pair of colours, 4 pair of
kettledrums, and 30 common drums.
