Canterbury, May 28. Monday a solder brought a two-penny loaf
to a magistrate of this city, complaining of its want of
weight, and demanding the penalty. The baker being sent
for, said he was very much surprized, as he had weighed all
the bread himself: however he payed the fellow five
shillings. But not being satisfied, he requested to have
the loaf cut, which the soldier opposed, as it was his loaf,
however it was cut asunder, and the fraud discovered. For
he had artfully taken out some of the crumb, and joined the
loaf together gain. The baker upon this had his money
again, and the soldier was delivered to his officers, and
tried by a court-martial, and being an old offender, he
received 500 lashes of Tuesday before the baker's house, the
soldiers being drawn up there for that purpose, and
afterwards was drummed out of the regiment, with a halter
about his neck, a two penny loaf at his back, and on a label
in large characters, a noted cheat.
