[London] March 30. This day the Duke of Devonshire, the
Earl of Northumberland, Lord Hertford, and Lord Carlisle,
were installed Knights of the Garter at Windsor. There was
the greatest concourse of persons of distinction at the
instalment, ever known on the like occasion, and they were
the most brilliant in their dresses and equipages; the Earl
of Northumberland had thirty servants in exceeding rich
liveries. The dinner consisted of several hundred dishes:
One, which was truly English, set on a side table, was much
takon notice of; this was a saddle of beef of 187 lb.
weight. The desert was curiously set out, representing
fountains, temples, colonades, interspersed with flowers and
ever-greens. The ball was in two rooms and did not break up
till four o'clock.
