Rome, May 19. The custom of this country, which allows
ecclesiastics to be present at the public spectacles, such
as operas, comedies, &c. has put the Pope upon considering
the necessity of suppressing the abuses that have crept into
those entertainments; and after giving the matter due
attention, his holiness had found, that there could be
nothing censurable in those spectacles, provided that all
things which favour too strongly of licentiousness were
banished. He has charged Father Concina to compose a
dissertation on this subject, which will shortly be made
public, the work being already in great forwardness.
