Rye, Aug. 15. Yesterday was played here a game of cricket
for a hundred guineas aside, between the ship's crew of the
Swallow privateer and the Royal Oak privateer, of twenty-two
men each side,. . . They went from the Red Lyon-Inn in this
place, preceded by their several commanders Capt. Henry
Staffield, and Capt. John Darle, with the colours of each
privateer flying, drums beating; And about ten o'clock in
the forenoon to the field where they play'd, and their
colours on each side of the game. After they had played one
ha[n]d out, they all dined together in a ring on the ground,
without any cloth, during which time, liquor being plenty,
the Swallow's men, at least the majority of them, got very
drunk, whereby it is thought they lost the match.
