Carrickfergust, Apr 23d 1746. Last night past 8 o'clock
arrived here . . . the following letter. . . which thoro'ly
confirms the joyful news. . . [1st para., 2d line: . . . on
Wednesday the 16th there was an engagement on Culloden Muir,
it began at 7 in the morning, and lasted till 10. The
action was very bloody, but the Duke [of Cumberland] gained
a compleat victory [over the rebels in Scotland], that the
Lords George Murray, and Kilmarnock were taken, and that the
young Pretender was taken at Lady Mackintosh' house two
hours after the battle.
. . . [2d para, 8 lines up from bottom] The Duke is very
well. The [decisive] battle [on Culloden Muir] was fought
two miles from Inverness. There are three letters from
Aberdeen which confirm the same joyful accounts. We have
had great rejoicings, ringing of bells, bonfires, drinking
the Duke's health, illuminations and all demonstrations of
the utmost joy on this happy occasion. The castles of
Edinburgh and Sterling, and all the ships fir'd two rounds
as soon as this express cam. You shall have more
particulars in my next. I am, &c.
