Edinburgh, Sept. 19. On Monday last the Highland Army stood
under the arms about Carstorphine, two miles west of this
city, till about four afternoon; then their advanced body
march'd up to attack Hamilton's and Gardner's Dragoons, and
the city companies, who stood under arms on this side of the
Colt-Bridge, a mile west of this city; immediately after the
dragoons, &c. retired, rode off, down the north side of this
city towards Leith,. . . This flight occasioned a general
consternation here, so that the principal inhabitants
considering that there was no expectation of General Cope's
army, and that the two regiments of dragoons had abandoned
them, addressed the Lord Provost, magistrates and council,
to capitulate, in regard the city was not tenable; lest, if
the Highlanders took it by storm, the inhabitants might be
pillaged and destroyed.--The magistrates ordered the fire
bell immediately to be rung, to summon all concerned to
attend them in the New Church, and give their best advice:
They were scarce met, when a letter was presented to them,
address'd, Charles, Prince Regent of the Kingdoms of
Scotland, England, France, and Ireland, and of the dominions
thereunto belonging, &c. . .
About noon the Pretender made his entry into the Abbey, in
Highland dress, accompanied by several nobility, persons of
distinction, &c. and, alighting, took possession of the
Royal Palace; all the rest of the infantry (about 5000)
remaining encamped in the King's Park. At one in the
afternoon the Highland party spread a carpet on the cross;
and, after cloathing the heralds, pursevants , &c. carried
them to the cross; where, with the sound of trumpet, they
proclaimed the Declaration and Act of Regency, both dated at
Rome, Dec. 23. 1745, and the Manifesto, in consequence of
the said Act of Regency, dated at Paris, May 16. 1745. . .
