Hanover, July 7. It is impossible to express the joy that
has been shewn here by all sorts of people, on account of
the victory gained lately by the allies, under the command
of our most gracious sovereign, over the French. On the 2d
of this month the Roman Catholicks celebrated a
thanksgiving, at their church in this city, with prodigious
pomp; and after the celebrating high mass, Father Moliter
gave out Te Deum, under the sound of kettledrums, trumpets,
and a grand symphony of soft musick and fine voices.
Afterwards 3000 ducats were distributed as alms to the poor.
The Jews, who appointed a day of solemn fasting and prayer,
to implore the divine protection for the person of his most
sacred Majesty the King of Great Britain, our sovereign,
observed it with a degree of strictness and devotion which
was very edifying. They too have celebrated a thanksgiving
for this victory. This morning we receiv'd a list of the
killed and wounded in this action. [Defeat of the French at
Dettingen, 27 June 1743.]
