Vienna, October 6, N.S. The trumpeter who came hither on
the 7th from the Elector of Bavaria, was accompanied by a
messenger from that Prince. Being both carried blindfold to
the Count de Kevenhuller, they deliver'd him a packet,
containing several manifesto's and circular letters directed
to the states of lower Austria, as well as to the tribunals
and colleges of this city, summoning them to pay him homage
and to take oath of allegiance to him as to their lawful
Prince and archduke of Austria. There was also a letter
directed to the Queen, with the titles only of archdukes of
Austria & great duchess of Tuscany, which for that reason
the count return'd to the trumpeter unopen'd, but he kept
the other papers, and detain'd both the trumpeter and the
messenger; after which he sent his secretary to Presburg
(now Bratislava) to know the [Hungarian] Queen's pleasure,
whose answer he receiv'd next day, importing, "That she
placed too great confidence in the zeal and affection of her
loyal subjects, to imagine they would give ear to proposals
so contrary to their duty; that she hop'd therefore they
would reject them in a proper manner; that they would
continue inviolably attach'd to their sovereign, and do
every thing in their power to repulse the enemies by whom
she was persecuted." The Count de Kevenholler immediately
dismiss'd both the trumpeter and the messenger, acquainting
them at the same time, that the faithful states and subjects
of lower Austria would continue inviolably attach'd to the
Queen. . .
