[London] From the Political State for October, 1738. . .
October the 23d, was imported from Scotland, 151,219 yards
of linnen, and 3000 spinnels of linnen yarn. By the
extraordinary entries made within these two years, of the
linnen manufacture from Ireland and Scotland, we may see how
richly they deserve the encouragement lately given them; and
'tis not an improbable supposition, that in a few years, we
shall find our imports of linnen from foreign countries very
much lessened. A glorious prospect this, to all true lovers
of their country, who wish well to industry and trade, and
contemn Italian singing and French tumbling. If the women
in this island could be inspired with notions of true
patriotism, the love of the publick would grow fashionable,
and self-interest would be as ridiculous as it is dishonest.
