Wednesday last was observed here (agreeable to his
Excellency's proposal to the Great and General Court or
Assembly as a day of pubick rejoicing, on account of the
marriage of his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, with her
Highness the Princess of Saxe-Gotha. The morning was
ushered in by ringing of all the bells in town, which
continued their melodious sound till eight at night; and as
an universal joy had overspread the town, all manner of
business was laid aside, and nothing to be seen but tokens
of joy and satisfaction among people of all ranks and
conditions. At 12 o'clock 30 cannon were discharged at
Castle William, being the number his Royal Highness the
Prince of Wales is years old, and 17 more agreeable to the
years of the Princess his consort. . . [38 lines: and the
Officers invited to Austin's Coffee-House, where was a most
elegant supper provided by order of his Excellency, and
after that a ball, at which were present a vast number of
persons of the first rank of both sexes. In a word, the
inhabitants of the town in general strove to outdo one
another in acts of loyalty and joy, and what is remarkable,
every thing seemed to be free and natural: For, besides the
Town-House, his excellency's seat, and the houses of some
gentlemen in post, who used to distinguish themselves upon
publick occasions, the whole town was most beautifully
illuminated, and so much pleasure and unaffected joy
discovered upon any occasion.
