   The Countess of L-- --a was at this time (about the year
1757) in the meridian of her charms . . . [5 lines]  Such a
figure could not fail attracting the eyes of every beholder;
and the first time she appeared at the Ridotto in the
Haymarket, Scotius was captivated with the beauty of her
person, the elegance of her figure, and the nobleness of her
mien.  He was introduced by a female friend, and they walked
a minuet, which was, perhaps, the best ever performed in
that circle. . .
