London. . . Upon receipt of the Lord Carteret's letter
[concerning victory over the French near Dettingen], the
Lords of the Regency immediately met at the Cockpit,
Whitehall, at three the guns in the park and at the Tower
were fired, and the evening concluded with ringing of bells,
bonfires, and all possible demonstrations of joy.
