We have likewise received here the following account of the
misfortune which befel the city of Chamh, dated the 9th of
September, viz. On the 7th instant a body of Pandours,
Hussars, &c. under command of Col. Trenk, appeared before
this city and summoned it up, but this being refused, they
began to fire at us, as we did likewise at them; a little
after they sent a drummer desiring us to stop for 24 hours,
which as agree'd to: In the mean time they were approaching
more and more, and one of the Pandours was so impudent as to
shew his posteriors to the watch which was upon the city
wall, who fired at him and killed him in that ugly posture:
Whereupon a drummer from the enemy appeared, desiring us to
deliver up the person that killed their fellow soldier, or
that they would revenge it upon the rest; Lieutenant ---
went immediately to their camp to confer with them about it,
but another drummer was immediately sent to tell us, that
they would not send the Lieutenant back unless he that
kill'd the Pandour was sent to their camp, we therefore also
kept the drummer; and as there were sometimes orders given
to fire, sometimes to stop, all was in a confusion within
the city.
