Paris. July 26 . . . The entertainment which Mademoiselle de
Clermont gave last week to the Queen, was one of the finest
that has been known: her Majesty went out of her apartment
at eleven at night, by the steps of the garden that led to
the labyrinth, which were illuminated on both sides. At the
bottom of the steps their was contrived a spacious hall,
which was adorned with branches and orange-trees. M.
Gedomeche, one of the musicians of the Royal Chapel, and of
the Queen's concert, being mounted on a pedestal,
represented Esop, and Mademoiselle de Minier, on another
pedestal, represented Love; their recitatives in music
lasted three quarters of an hour: the Queen went into the
hall of the labyrinth, which was magnificently illuminated,
where all sorts of refreshments were served in profusion:
near this was erected a theatre, on which was acted, The
Triumph of Reason, a new play which lasted two hours; from
thence her Majesty return'd to labyrinth into the hall of
the orangery, which was likewise illuminated, and there the
illustrious company danced until four in the morning, when
her Majesty returned to her apartment. The Duke de Noailles
is likewise to give at Trianon a ball to her majesty, and
there is every week one feast or another at Versailles,
where the Queen sups every night with the ladies of her
palace and of her court.
