Rome, Apr 14. On the 12th in the morning a solemn mass
was sung in every church in this city, to obtain of Heaven a
full effusion of the Holy Ghost upon those who are to assist
at that council. In the afternoon a preliminary
congregation was held at the palace, in presence of the
Pope, who open'd it by an excellent discourse concerning the
motives that had obliged him to call the council: he
declar'd, that it was not out of any desire of novelty, but
only to enforce the observance of the decrees of the council
of Trent, contrary to which an infinity of abuses were
introduced, of which he himself had discovered a great
number in several churches.
