JoLaine Jones-Pokorney (Gainesville FL) found contra dancing when a friend took her to her first dance in Savannah Georgia in 1997. She was instantly hooked and began dancing all over the country, indeed the world! She found her husband, Dave Pokorney, at a contra dance weekend in Birmingham in 2004 and together they’ve danced 156 weekend camps and 20 week-long camps (so far). She believes that music and dance are play and community-building. Spreading this joy is a worthwhile way to spend one’s life and is happy to commit time to serving CDSS.
JoLaine has served on the governing committee of the Gainesville Oldtime Dance Society (GODS) in Gainesville FL, and is one of the main organizers of the Dancing with the GODS contra weekend. Why dance with mortals when you can dance with the GODS?!
JoLaine first started calling contras when she joined the New Zealand contra dance trip in February of 2008 and has since been a regular caller in Florida, also touring the East Coast and California. She especially loves to call events for non-dancers. JoLaine was a caller at “Catapult! Showcase” in 2013 and has been a reviewer for talent applying to “Catapult! Showcase” in 2012 and 2017 and makes every effort to hire new talent
JoLaine also plays recorders and simple-system flute in the Gainesville English Country Dance band, “Hogtown Fancy,” and the waltz band, “Stay Tuned.” She is an early music enthusiast, playing recorders and crumhorns in the Renaissance ensemble “Musica Vera,” and recorders and harpsichord in the baroque trio “Fete de Toot.” She is also an annual “interloper” in the Atlanta Open Band.
