Katy Heine (Ithaca, NY) A dance caller and organizer, Katy makes her home in Ithaca, New York, in the heart of the beautiful Finger Lakes region. She holds a master’s degree in theater from Cornell University, where she has worked since 2008 in the media department of the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions.
Katy remembers being the only kid in her elementary school gym class who was actually happy when the unit on square dancing rolled around! She began contra dancing in earnest while in graduate school in the late 1970s and started calling dances in 1989, after taking her first callers’ workshop with Steve Zakon-Anderson at Ashokan Fiddle and Dance Camp. Her goal as a caller is to keep everyone smiling, which she accomplishes through careful programming and thoughtful teaching. Although primarily a contra dance caller, in recent years Katy has been developing as a caller of English country dances as well.
Katy is a founding member of the CDSS affiliate Hands Four Dancers of Ithaca, which brings half a dozen special dance events to the Ithaca area every year. She also frequently attends CDSS-run camps with her husband, Phil.
