Crowd Pleasing Contras: Rebecca LayMusic by: Jean DesRochers, Véronique Plasse, Guillaume Turcotte Fun and satisfying dances for your midmorning enjoyment, with fantastic Quebecois tunes by BARBO! |
Partner Dance Boot Camp: Matthew Olwell, Emily OlesonMusic by: Ethan Hazzard-Watkins, Jesse Readlynn, Owen Morrison Like to waltz? How about a little swing? Zydeco? Satisfying partner dancing is all about physics: center of gravity, weight, centrifugal force, velocity, time/space etc. Learning how to use these elements effectively and adapt your movement to each partner is a process of discovering yourself and "listening" with your body. A kinder, gentler boot camp where we bring serious rigor to the simple and elegant fundamentals of having a one-on-one dance conversation - but without the pain and push-ups! |
|
Ensemble: Lissa SchneckenburgerIn this class participants will have the opportunity to learn how to play well together as a group, and get lots of repertoire and arranging ideas to take home. Appalachian Clogging & Flatfooting: Matthew OlwellMusic by: Emily Miller Clogging and flatfooting is really REALLY fun, and great exercise! We will explore musicality and economy of motion to acquire a solid foundation of rhythmic building blocks. We will also use musical ideas from tap traditions to open new doors in our choreography and improvisation. A great class for students of any level, from beginners who want a fast-paced course including steps and improv drills, to advanced dancers who want to revisit the basics to hone their technique, facility and repertoire. |

Quebec style Piano: Guillaume TurcotteA Quebec piano class where you can learn the style's particular rhythms and accompaniments. All students welcome - from beginning to advanced. |

Boat Building: Jesse ReadlynnTake a break from the tunes to build a model sailboat that sails itself. The boats are easy and fun to design, build, and sail, using simple tools and basic materials; no prior woodworking experience is necessary. The design for the sailboats comes from Richard Hooke, long-time English dancer and early musician. Jesse learned to build the boats in Richard's woodworking classes as a child in Amherst, MA. Jesse will guide the class through all the steps from designing the shape of the hull, to trimming the rigging to make the sailboat fly across the pond. Weather permitting, we'll hold a regatta at the end of the week. |

A Tour of Traditional Squares: Nils FredlandMusic by: Ethan Hazzard-Watkins, Owen Morrison, Corey DiMario Traditional squares have had a place in New England ballrooms and the ranches of the Southwest, in the Southern Appalachians, and in communities from Quebec to California -- and everywhere in between and beyond. Our week together will take us on a journey to sample the diverse range of styles included in the broad category of traditional squares. The music will be fantastic, the repertoire will be rich and interesting, and the calling will be engaging, skillful, and exciting. Join us! |

We'll play with Appalachian flatfooting, some contemporary urban dances, and in particular vernacular jazz movement like the Shorty George, Suzie Q, and the Charleston, vintage dances of African American origins done in the 1920s, '30s and '40s.
