While geared to people who can dance primarily in the New England style, the series also is helpful to the organizers, callers, dances and musicians of any contra and square dance event. Basically for Callers, a series of three articles by Ted Sannella, appeared in the News in 1999 and 2000 and was part of the original manuscript for Ted’s dance collection Swing the Next (CDSS, 1996) (see below) but ultimately was not included in the book. | ||

| Ted Sannella | **CALLING TRADITIONAL NEW ENGLAND SQUARES (booklet with CD) | |
| Ted Sannella was one of the masters of the art of calling traditional squares. As renowned dance teacher Marianne Taylor wrote recently, "His square dance calling was the most exciting I ever danced to!" In Ted's view the most creative and challenging part of calling squares was the improvisation of breaks. To help callers learn more about traditional squares and the art of calling breaks, CDSS has published this booklet from text that was part of the original manuscript for Swing the Next (CDSS, 1996). A very exciting addition to this booklet is a CD of Ted calling 14 different squares, chosen for the variety of their breaks. The CD was produced by David Millstone from the tapes in The Ted Sannella Collection at the University of New Hampshire's Library of Traditional Music and Dance. Caller Sue Rosen wrote the introduction and edited the text; David Millstone transcribed two versions of Ted's signature dance Merry-Go-Round (also included on the CD). | ||
