Program Description: [Back to Top]
Look up our Special Programs for some general information; here is more detail about this particular program and staff.

This class is for contra callers who want to add squares to their repertoire and will focus on teaching and calling square dances in an effective and confident manner. We will concentrate on traditional Southern, old Western and New England-style square dances, and build skills in teaching, using patter, vocal technique, using breaks, phrasing, programming and more. There will be lots of hands-on practice in class as well as the potential to call a dance in the evening. All this with positive critiques and a supportive atmosphere.

This program, held concurrently with Folk Music Week, is designed and led by Kathy Anderson. Kathy has been calling squares for many years, and has pleased audiences all over the U.S. and in Europe with her clear teaching and enthusiastic presentation of a great variety of dances. Passing the skills along to keep this tradition alive and well is something she particularly enjoys.

Class Descriptions: [Back to Top]
Each day is divided into two parts. The participants of the Callers Course will meet every day from 9:00 to 11:15 for an intensive workshop with Kathy. These sessions are designed to allow for plenty of opportunity for callers to practice new skills. Each caller will be encouraged to design a personal project/goal to accomplish by week's end.

In the afternoons and evenings, participants can choose from among the activities available at Folk Music Week.

Materials: [Back to Top]
A sheet of dances to study in advance will be sent to registrants with their acceptance materials.

Registration: [Back to Top]

The registration deadline for this course is March 19. If it is oversubscribed on the 19th, there will be a lottery. This course is limited to 12 participants to ensure plenty of opportunity for active participation. In case of over-subscription, some preference will be given to applicants from areas that are under-served with square dance callers. Please clearly indicate if you would like to attend Folk Music Week if you do not get into this course. Scholarships are available.
