Program Description: [Back to Top]
Look up our Special Programs for some general information; here is more detail about this particular program and staff.
The Sound Operators Course provides a rich blend of hands-on experience and technical guidance for a wide range of interested people from industrious newcomers to experienced sound operators. The program focuses on the special demands of called dances and acoustic instruments. The English & American Dance Week program at Pinewoods is a perfect setting for participants to learn about microphones and placement, mixing carefully to give dancers the perfect blend of music and calling, tone controls and equalization, feedback elimination and care and maintenance of sound equipment. There will be ample opportunity for discussion and analysis in addition to a solid week of working on stage beside the workshop leader, Warren Argo.
Warren has over 40 years of amateur and professional experience with electronics and sound systems. He is a musician, dancer and caller. He is a friendly and engaging fellow whose curiosity, humour and energy make him an ideal instructor for a course of this sort.
Class Descriptions: [Back to Top]
Each day, participants, probably in pairs, will be assigned one class and will, under Warren's supervision, have hands on experience under fire. Participants will also have opportunities to assist Warren while he operates the sound board for the evening dances. To help answer many questions, we will carve time out of each day to get together while dance halls are empty and we can more freely experiment with the sound systems. In addition to the work with Warren, participants can choose from among the activities available at English & American Dance Week.
Registration: [Back to Top]
This course is limited to 8 participants to ensure plenty of opportunity for active participation.
The registration deadline is March 19. If it is oversubscribed on the 19th, there will be a lottery.
Please clearly indicate on your registration form if you would like to attend English & American Dance Week if you do not get into this course. Scholarships are available.
