Program Description: [Back to Top]
Look up our Special Programs for some general information; here is more detail about this particular program and staff.

This class will focus on the stylistic points of old-time and string band music for musicians beyond the beginning level who have a few tunes under their belt. Most of the work will be by ear, but song sheets will be provided. We will work on specific playing techniques and improvisation within the style.

This program, held concurrently with Folk Music Week, is designed and run by Greg and Jere Canote. The Canote Brothers, from Seattle, WA, are as renowned for their affable attitudes and humor as they are for their music. Greg on fiddle, and Jere on guitar, both on banjo ukes, play for dances, lead songs and promote a good time. They are mainstays of the West Coast music scene. Working with the Canotes is Pete Vigour, from central Virginia. Pete grew up in a musical family and has played and sung string band music all his life. His band, Uncle Henry's Favorites, has played for dances and parties for 20 years. Pete teaches music full-time, and enjoys playing at jam sessions.

Class Descriptions: [Back to Top]
In the morning, the whole group will meet with Greg and Jere to discuss history, listen to and play through examples. There will be ample opportunities for playing and singing in this class. In the afternoon there will be separate instrument classes -- Fiddle with Greg, Guitar with Jere and Banjo with Pete Vigour and a serious jam session with Pete to really lay into repertoire. There will also, in ones, twos and groups, be some opportunities to join Greg and Jere playing for the period 2 Dance Class and in the evenings.

Registration: [Back to Top]

The registration deadline for this course is March 20. If it is oversubscribed on the 20th, there will be a lottery. This course is limited to 18 participants to ensure plenty of opportunity for active participation. In case of over-subscription, we may make choices to unify the playing level. Scholarships are available.
